Kuala Terengganu: Kitchee opened up a three-point lead at the top of Group H of the AFC Cup 2012 after the Hong Kong league champions overcame stiflingly hot afternoon conditions to beat Terengganu 2-0 on Tuesday.
The visitors may not have found the hot and humid weather on Malaysia’s east coast to their liking but they defended well to counter the attacking threat posed by the home side and punished a couple of defensive lapses by the Malaysian FA Cup holders to claim their second consecutive win following a 3-1 victory over Tampines Rovers two weeks ago.
Kitchee went ahead just a minute before half-time when poor marking by the Terengganu defence allowed a cross from the left to find Spanish forward Jordi Tarres, who fired home the opening goal.
They increased their lead in the 75th minute when a poor clearance led to Kitchee skipper Chu Siu Kei being presented with an easy opportunity to slot in his side’s second.
Much had been expected of Terengganu’s Francis Foe after his hat-trick against Sabah in the Malaysian Super League last weekend but the Liberian forward was held firmly in check by the Kitchee defence throughout the match.
Speaking after the game, Kitchee coach Josep Gombau admitted that his side may have been fortunate to pick up the win.
“We were quite lucky because the game was quite equal but we got two goals because of mistakes by their defenders,” said the Spaniard.
“Terengganu attacked quite well and the conditions here were tough for us but my players performed well and we will gladly take the three points.”
Terengganu coach Mat Zan Mat Aris was left to rue the defensive lapses that saw his side slip to their first loss in the group.
“We did quite well early on but because of our defensive mistakes, the players became demotivated and they began to look quite tired because of our recent tight schedule,” he said.
“But Kitchee are a very good team and they played well and defended well today.”
