M-LEAGUE: Liberian fired up to make big impact for Selangor
EVEN though former Primera Liga top scorer Daniel Guiza has come into the picture with Johor's Darul Takzim, it has not deterred Selangor's Francis Forkey Doe from setting an ambitious target for the 2013 M-League season.
The former Liberia international wants to score in every Super League match and if he keeps his promise, he could become the top-scorer with 22 goals in the 12-team competition, played over two rounds.
Doe, who made his league debut in the league last season with Terengganu and ended it on a high by plundering 15 goals to become joint top-scorer with Negri Sembilan's Effa Owona.
The 27-year-old has joined Selangor on a one-year deal and he hopes to make an immediate impact for the former champions.
Doe showed signs of his eye for goals in the recent Aceh Governor Cup as despite joining Selangor only one week before the event, he scored a goal.
Coach Irfan Bakti played him for only 10 minutes in the tournament as he was then struggling with fitness.
The striker is expected to partner with either Ramzul Zahini Adnan or Afiq Azmi or Amri Yahyah in attack.
Doe hopes his goals would help Selangor end their two-year title drought in the season, which starts on Jan 8.
"I want to score in every match. It could be more than one goal in every game...I don't really care as long I score," warned Doe at the State Administrative training ground in Shah Alam on Tuesday.
"I am not setting a specific target as I do not want to add unnecessary pressure to myself. It is going to be an exciting season."
Doe's contract with Terengganu was not renewed at the end of last season as they regarded him as a loner.
According to a reliable source, the moody player often trained alone without the assistance of his former teammates.
But Doe's ambition to become top-scorer could be tough in the presence of Guiza, a member of Spain's Euro 2008 winning team, who was the Primera Liga top scorer when playing for Real Mallorca in the 2007-08 season.
Guiza, one of the biggest signings in recent years, is already making an impact in friendly matches for Darul Takzim.
The 32-year-old has scored 11 goals in five friendly matches.
Norshahrul Idlan Talaha, Safee Sali and Zaquan Adha Radzak, who have signed with Darul Takzim, are also contenders for the top-scorer's award along with Ternegganu's Effa Owona.
On his fitness, Doe said: "On the scale of one to 10, my fitness is about six or seven. I am working hard to regain my fitness."
Doe, who scored five goals in 16 appearances for Liberia, said he hopes to forge a good understanding with his teammates before Selangor's opening match against Negri Sembilan on Jan 8.
"I need to work harder to form a good chemistry especially with my new partner in attack," he added.
